Microsoft Set To Spoil Sony's CES PS3 Announcement?

Despite not being officially announced, some US retailers have begun allowing customers to pre-order the highly anticipated Halo 3. The title, hinted at by Microsoft's Bill Gates earlier this year is likely to break the $250m first day sales record already set by Microsoft's 2004 blockbuster hit Halo 2.

The news has prompted speculation that Microsoft may announce the game at CES 2006 in Las Vegas. Any form of announcement, verbal or visual is likely to deal a blow to any Sony announcement regarding the Playstation 3.

Microsoft was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

FAR CRY INSTINCS COMING TO THE XBOX360?

Far Cry Instincts has reared it's ugly head on the latest GameStop release list, inciting rumors of the game coming to 360 hardware. While purely speculation at this point, it certainly seems feasible that a Far Cry incarnation would be making it's way onto next generation consoles. Is this an error on GameStop's part, or a legitimate coming-soon release? Only time will tell.

The Elder Scrolls IV Unfurls in March?
Recent evidence points toward a possible release date.

In a newsletter from EBgames.com, they officially advertised The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for pre-order. So what's the big deal? Well, the release of Oblivion has been a subject of intense debate since E3 2005. Initially the game was supposed to launch with the console, then it was moved to the annoyingly vague "launch window," and now nobody really knows. However, with EBgames.com sending out a newsletter urging people to preorder, perhaps they have some reason to be more confident in their listed March 20, 2006 ship date.

Whether the game will actually release in March is, unfortunately, still something that can't be confirmed. Bethesda has remained tight-lipped about the actual release since they're committed to polishing the game as much as they feel necessary before it hits store shelves.

If you didn't already know, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is poised to be one of the most immersive, expansive single player role playing experiences to hit store shelves. It offers a vast array of character customization options, with myriad methods of combining character classes, primary and secondary skills, as well as seemingly countless amounts of items, armor and weaponry. The game is also touting an advanced artificial intelligence system called Radiant AI which should allow for NPCs to follow unique daily regimens. If you've seen any of the screens or movies, it's easy to see the game looks gorgeous so far.

Gothic 3 On Xbox360?

German site JoWood News is reporting that JoWood, the European publisher of Gothic 3, has recently received a substantial bid to sell the XBox publishing rights for its hit CRPG.

JoWood's CEO Albert Seidl has been contacted by an American company offering several million dollars for this rights.

Gothic 3 is made by the German developer Piranha Bytes, and is a highly anticipated open ended RPG game in development for the PC platform. The game is due out later this year.

The Portable Xbox is Real

It’s far from done and details are sketchy, but the portable Xbox is very real. Dean Takahashi of The Mercury News breaks news this morning that Microsoft is working on a portable gaming device that will compete directly with Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS. According to the report J Allard is leading the team, with Greg Gibson (system designer for Xbox 360) and Bryan Lee (finance chief for Xbox business).
[In a bid to capture the huge audience for handheld entertainment gadgets, Microsoft is designing a product that combines video games, music and video in one handheld device, according to sources familiar with the project.

The Microsoft product would compete with Sony, Nintendo and Apple Computer's products,
including the iPod. And Microsoft has some of its most seasoned talent from the division that created its popular Xbox 360 working on it. Game executive J Allard leads the project, and its director is Greg Gibson, who was the system designer on the Xbox 360 video game console. Bryan Lee, the finance chief on the Xbox business, is leading the business side of the project.

By anchoring its entertainment device as a handheld game player, Microsoft is starting from its position of strength in the entertainment business that it hopes Apple cannot match, even with its iPod. The game press has dubbed it an "iPod killer,'' but its functions would likely more closely resemble Sony's PlayStation Portable multimedia gaming device.
